If you click on the Spendley Tree to the right you will see a very detailed genealogy of the Wilhelm/Swick/ Family. The details of this tree was put together by Ed Wilhelm. We will eventually pair down some of this genealogy to be more refined to our family but you can get a sense of what a "Family Tree" would look like.
In reviewing the genealogy reports I received from Ed Wilhelm I have determined how Wilhelm/Swick relates to Spendley.
1) Harry Spendley came to the United States in 1899 (he was born in 1872 so he was 27 years old).
2) As part of a social group (cards & bowling are cited), Harry met Joseph Wilhelm. Joseph took a liking to Harry and introduced Harry to his family.
3) Harry met Joseph's sister Anna sometime after 1899. They dated for a few years and were married on June 30, 1903.
4) Harry and Anna had 8 children, the oldest being Walter (AKA Grandpa in most of this website) who was born April 23, 1904.
5) Walter married Anna O'Brien on September 4, 1926. Anna was one of 5 children from George and Anna O'Brien who had immigrated to America in 1900 and soon become a construction worker best known for being one of two licensed dynamite blaster in the state of New Jersey. He was best known for the blasting in NJ that formed the exit from the Holland Tunnel to the highway and Pulaski Skyway.
One of Harry's sons, traveling with his granddaughter in England attempted to do some additional research on the Spendley and O'Brien families. They were told that many records had been destroyed by a fire caused by German bombings during World War II.
Apparently, Harry was placed in an Orphanage at age 2 with a sister (2 years older). He left the orphanage at age of 13 and worked for the Merchant Marine for approximately 13 years (from age 13 - age 26). He was apparently a "deep sea fisherman" and at the age of 27 came to the United States with a friend of his and ended up in NYC.
As we update the genealogy of each of our family members (Spendley-Hayden) we want to make sure we are accurate in all accounts and facts. We want to include Biological information that will provide as much details as possible for each family member - that way there is some family legacy that can live on.
Ricky - this will take you off the hook for updating the Spendley Family Directory, unless you were left a small stipend from Grandpa in order to keep it updated.
There is a lot of work to do on making this family tree unique to Spendley Family. I plan on working with members of each of the family to gather more detailed information, pictures of everyone and make sure everything is accurate. If you have any interest in helping me with this project please contact me directly - my goal is to have a family member from each of the specific Spendley Hayden Families (Walter, Robert, Rosemary & Bill) and they will author and create the details of their own family history.
